A study on the long-term use of Viagra in patients with low sexual desire has found that men who had sex more than twice a week were more likely to be hospitalized.

The study, led by researchers at the University of Sao Paulo, involved more than 40,000 Brazilian men aged 40 and over.
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, was the most commonly prescribed drug for the study, said lead study author Luiz Lopes, a researcher at the University of Sao Paulo.
"The drug was highly effective for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, which is the primary reason for the hospitalization," he said. "This is the first trial that showed that men who had sexual activity were more likely to receive this treatment."
The study, published in the journal European Journal of Medicine, was a one-year follow-up study of 18,979 men aged 40 to 64 who had been prescribed Viagra. The researchers examined the data in terms of the number of sexual attempts per month in those with a normal sexual interest and duration of the study. They also looked at other factors that were associated with treatment, such as sexual intercourse, relationship issues, and substance use.
The study examined patients with erectile dysfunction who had been prescribed Viagra as well as those who did not. The researchers found that patients who were prescribed Viagra had higher rates of hospitalization for ED.
The study also found that men who were prescribed Viagra in the same way as their partner had a lower rate of ED.
"In general, there was no clear association between the duration of sexual activity and ED," said Lopes. "We found that patients with a longer duration of sexual activity also had a higher rate of ED than those who did not. The study is not suggesting that Viagra is the same as the placebo."
The study, which was funded by Eli Lilly, was published online Monday.
The study was published in the journal European Journal of Medicine.
Lopes said that the study was done with the support of the United Kingdom-based charity the Sexual Advice Association.
"The findings are important because we are going to have a very important study next week," he said.
Viagra, approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration in 1998 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, is used to treat men with erectile dysfunction.
The drug is available in two forms, which can be taken orally or injected.
"The results of the study show that in addition to being highly effective in treating erectile dysfunction, Viagra is also highly effective in treating the symptoms of ED," Lopes said.
The study was funded by Eli Lilly and Company, a U. company that makes Viagra, and is an affiliate of Astra Zeneca, Inc., the maker of Cialis.
In a statement, the company said the results were the result of a "long-term, open-label, controlled clinical trial," conducted in partnership with the company.
Lopes said that the study was conducted in collaboration with the company and the U. Food and Drug Administration.
"The drug has been approved for use in the U. S., Europe, the Middle East, and other parts of North America. The company is committed to making available to consumers the drug for those who are sensitive to the drug," the statement said.
